For leading zero, I do not know (why do you want to know if there is/are leading
zeros?), but for knowing where to get the month number, using a value past 12 (>
12; starting at 13) is what I would use.
So, for days, use a value after 12 (12 months a year), and for month, use a
value below 10 if you want to know if there is a leading zero (recall me why you
want to know that, please), and use whatever year you want (your birth year for
example).

It was suggested to me that leading zeroes are best avoided in case of
weird masks, so Mar 25 1978 might be better.
I assumed that as part of the format, you wished to know whether
there should be leading zeroes. Mar 04 will tell you that; Mar 25
won't.
