Is there any reason I shouldn't change it? What is RBs definition of MDI? Does that mean multiple instances of the *same* documents, or simply even having multiple windows in general? How does it affect the end result?

Hello,

It's Multiple Document Interface. It's a Windows definition, not RB's. Basically, you use it if you want multiple windows with a common menu bar, a la Mac. Someone else may give a more precise description.
