I've had a little experience (without much success) using IOKit's HID
hooks to talk to POS retail devices (docket & label printers, card
printers, pole displays, tills etc) directly. Then I gave up, and
traded them all in on peripherals with NIC's so I can communicate via
sockets, which is MUCH easier.
It may be possible, it's just (the HID manager functions anyway) very
involved.
I'd try getting into contact with Steve Garman, I believe he was / is
doing something with the IOKit...
Cheers,
Tom

I am evaluation the possibility of a small project.
I have sample C code calling IOService functions from
<IOKit/storage/IOCDMedia.h> and similar headers.
Does someone know if I can do this in RB at all?
