Thanks Tom, this works great.
The reason for the IP address is that the connection is made over
the Internet. The Rendesvous name is only valid on the LAN. I ping
the Rendesvous name first to establish if the Laptop sees the local
server and then I'll use the Rendesvous name to connect. When this
fails. I assume the user is out of the office and is using the
Internet. Does this make sense?
