This is surely a bad idea, but could you make the height of the canvas based on the amount of text that is to be displayed on it and *then* scroll it?
Another idea... Ttp Software has/had an example that shows how to scroll a canvas with static text boxes placed on top of it. However, I don't see it on their site any more. You might be able to find it at RBGarage, but if not, let me know and I'll send it off-list. RBGarage seems to be down at the moment.
