If I remember right, there is a bug or a 'lack of support' for this in at least one version of Acrobat. It's been a while since I even tried this on a Mac, so this functionality might have been added again with a later version of Acrobat.
Also, while you can't control which version of Acrobat your users install, my guess is that viewing PDF files in the default browser on that particular machine simply no longer works.
