1) why can't we simply use *any* graphic file format as an icon? is this strictly an OS issue?
Graphic file formats aren't involved. You can paste in any graphics which are on the clipboard. What format those came from, if they came from files at all, is irrelevant.
(and, a less important point, why don't the icon boxes support drag and drop?)
Beats me. Maybe nobody's requested it. Or maybe it does, but not for what you're trying to drag -- file formats would indeed be relevant in that case.
2) In my experience once you've pasted the icons in and, say, decide to use a different one, the old one seems to stick.
If you're on the Mac, this is probably the Finder getting confused. It does that a lot. This has nothing to do with REALbasic; the same happens in any development environment.
The icon architecture doesn't seem fundamentally intuitive. Then again, maybe my intuit needs minor adjustment. . .?
Heh, maybe. Reasonable people may disagree about what's intuitive. If you have ideas for a better UI, and you think it's worth spending engineering time on at REAL Software, then you should file a feature request for it.
