I have tried something like this.I have an application called IRemember that among other things stores telephone numbers. I decided to have it dial numbers by beeping the requisite numbers. Regrettably I almost always got wrong numbers.

Hi Thom,

The beeps you hear from a touch-tone phone (or your alarm device
pretending to be one) are known as DTMF. Each beep is a simple mix
of two frequencies, one indicating the row and one indicating the
column.

I'm sure with a bit of searching you can find hardware DTMF interface
-- this is how all those annoying "For English, press 1" telephone mazes work. It should also be possible to do this in software, if
you just feed the audio output of a phone into the microphone input
of a computer.

If you'd like to contract some help in working this out, please
contact me off-list -- the topic intrigues me.

Best,
- Joe
