Yes, that can be quite a problem when dealing with non-Unicode apps.
I read data from two external sources, (on a Mac using OSX),
a) From a FileMaker database via
1) AppleScripts
2) ODBC
The encoding here will probably be whatever it was when it went in --
probably the default WorldScript encoding for whatever machine was
used to enter the data. Try using Encodings.SystemDefault if you
expect your machine to be set up the same way as the entry machine.
b) Email from
1) An email server
2) An email client
For this one, you have to look at the headers of the message.
There's one there that tells you what encoding it is. I'm sorry I
don't have more detail handy, but perhaps that will get you started.
