If I were on Cocoa or your are on RB 2K5/2K6, your might use WebKit or HTMLView.

Yea, Safari can display PDFs very nicely with the Adobe plugin, so I thought about trying an HTML viewer. Apparently however, the HTML viewer does not take advantage of the Adobe plugin, so it didn't work. In fact, it didn't work at all. Just a big white screen.

Now, I only tried this on RB2005r4 for OSX, and I've got to say, there are some annoying bugs in the HTML control - I don't know if any of them have been fixed in a newer version, or on Windows or Linux, but on OSX, the HTML viewer in RB2005r4 does not display PDFs at all.

I went through this recently.

The HTMLViewer can display pdfs very nicely. On Windows, it uses IE, so you get the Adobe Reader plugin.

It clearly *wants* to do the same thing on the Mac, but if you have a recent Adobe reader plugin, it's broken. If you *don't* have the Adobe Reader plugin, and you're on a recent build of 10.4 (not sure when this appeared), Safari, and hence the HTML Viewer, has built-in ability to display a PDF. It's basic, but it works.

Safari also works with the Adobe Reader plugin, but other webkit apps I've tried (there are alternative Webkit browsers on the Mac) just display a blank page.

You can delete /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/AdobePDFViewer.plugin and the built-in PDF displaying feature of Safari and webkit kicks in.

The annoying thing is that, early in testing this, Adobe reader was working in Webkit on the Mac. Don't know who broke it: Apple or Adobe, but it's broke right now.

I don't know if a greater Declares wizard than I can give us a way of bypassing the plugin just in our apps, or if you are in a position to delete the plugin for your users. Or maybe there is somewhere we can move the plugin to where it will work in Safari but not in other Webkit apps.

It's frustrating that it clearly ought to work and is just broken. Hope some of this information is useful to someone.
