My Quartz Composer article might be one route, but it's limited to static images that are premade as qtz movies. I suspect what you probably really want is the ability to add a matte track to a movie, so you can draw on that track and see the other movie track behind it. Perhaps this could be accomplished with the QT API SetTrackMatte function. This will involve some heavy lifting via declares or a plugin. I believe MBS has this functionality already. Unless you're a QuickTime and Declare/plugin whiz, it's almost certainly a cheaper route than writing your own solution.(it involves GraphPtrs and other goodies that aren't always so fun to deal with in RB). Not to dissuade you from trying though. It can be done, but it's a lot of work. Another option you have in QuickTime would be to create a sprite track and turn on transparency. Thirdly, you could investifate skinned movie tracks, as they also permit transparency. QuickTime is pretty vast and many tasks can be accomplished in multiple ways, but it's not built in.
