I'm using 5.5.5.

If you need to use paths at all, then I strongly recommend upgrading. That version of RB is ancient and this is just one of many, many problems which have long since been fixed.

I'm using the paths, both in string manipulations, and to
find and copy the files throughout the app.

That's generally not necessary. Use .Parent and .Child instead to navigate folder hierarchies, and if you need to store and retrieve a FolderItem reference, use GetSaveInfo.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere a warning saying not to use Absolutepath
because Mac's allow volumes and folders to be named the same thing...?

True. But using ShellPath isn't much better, as you have found.

Best,
