I am unable to embed files into a console app?

I have an app that I am trying to turn into a console app. If I try  
to drag a file into the project so that I can call it by name I get a  
failed assertion. Is this not possible in a console app? If not, what  
would be a workaround? I don't want to require a bunch of support  
files to be installed with this console app if I can avoid it.
