Yes, it's quite difference.
I try to type some Japanese (I think).. but I could not see an 'big'
difference...
In case it helps, here's how to type the word "Japanese" in Japanese:
1. Switch the keyboard script to "Kotoeri" or "Hiragana" (depending
on what version of OS X you're running).
2. Carefully type "nihongo". A mixture of simple Japanese phonetic
characters, and Roman characters, will appear as you type. After
typing all six characters, you should see four of the phonetic
characters, underlined.
3. Now press the space bar, and they should change to three of the
more complex characters (looks like Chinese), with a bolder
underline. Press Return to accept these characters, and the
underline disappears.
You can repeat this as fast as you can type "nihongo<space><return>"
and see how your app keeps up. This is a realistic test.
