Stop here if you've seen this before. Many years ago, when I was in college, a group of professors supposedly got together to discuss the proposition that all odd numbers are prime.
The first to report his results was the math professor who said: 1 is prime 3 is prime therefore by induction, all odds are prime. Next came the physics prof, who said: 1 is prime 3 is prime 5 is prime 7 is prime oops, 9 is not prime 11 is prime I can conclude that within experimental error, all odds are prime. Then came the philosophy teacher: 1 is prime 3 is prime 5 is prime 7 is prime 9 is not Hmmmm, is 1 REALLY prime? Finally, the Economics professor had a go: 1 is prime 3 is prime 5 is prime 7 is prime 9 is prime 11 is prime Yep, all odds are prime.
