Should this not work to get me one date and then the second one a week before???
No, it shouldn't. To see why, let's go through it step by step.
Dim weekenddate, weekstartdate As Date
OK, we have two Date references, both currently nil.
weekenddate=new Date
Create a date object (#1), and make weekenddate refer to it.
weekstartdate=new Date
Create another date object (#2), and make weekstartdate refer to it.
weekstartdate=weekenddate
Make weekstartdate refer to the same thing as weekenddate, i.e., they both now refer to date object #1 (and date object #2, since it has no remaining references, gets destroyed).
weekstartdate.TotalSeconds=weekstartdate.TotalSeconds-604800
Change the totalSeconds of date object #1.
When I do this both dates are the same.....
Yep; you put in an assignment statement whose job it is to make them both refer to the same object.
