Unless you need to block execution of other code from running while the thread runs, in which case you need to use a semaphore or critical section

Confusing is better than possibly crashing which you may get with app.DoEvents

Any other code could just check to see if the thread is still running and simply do nothing and return if the thread is still doing its bit
