since everyone is chiming in... why not get to the root of the
problem and check to see if drawing is faster with quickdraw/quartz?
just build a picture, set .useoldrender and time both.

Is there a way to tell if the user's computer has Quartz Extreme
accelerated rendering available?
Use a shell and the following command:
system_profiler SPDisplaysDataType | grep Quartz
Possilbe results are:
-Quartz Extreme: Not Supported
-Quartz Extreme: Supported
Declare Function CGMainDisplayID Lib "Carbon" () as Integer
Declare Function CGDisplayUsesOpenGLAcceleration Lib "Carbon" (id
as Integer) as Boolean
QEenabled = CGDisplayUsesOpenGLAcceleration(CGMainDisplayID())
