Gosh I just HATE the incredibly stupid idea of file extensions.

File extensions aren't stupid. They're a reasonable hack for encoding a few bytes of metadata that works across file systems. What would be incredibly stupid would be for Apple to drop mac types in favor of extensions. I think uniform type identifiers are intended to be the long-term replacement for mac types, but I haven't really read the documentation.
