Sounds like you're building a preferences window and you want it to show the 
currently selected
preference page in the toolbar like all proper MacOS X apps do.

Last time I checked, the Carbon API had no hooks for this, the solution was to 
call into the Cocoa
API to get the selection-mode. So, you could do all that declare work, using a 
few of the toolbar
extension classes/modules that exist to help ya get started. Or, you could just 
create your own
class that emulates the appearance of the MacOS X preference toolbar.

Realize though, that if you create your own class to emulate the native look, 
there is the very
real possability that Apple will change the toolbar appearance and your program 
will end up
looking weird.
