Why? Didn't they want to pay him? I think there has to be a little more to that story.

There was some disagreement about the method of payment. Not the payment or billing or amount owed but the method. One wanted to use Paypal to move money internationally, but it can be expensive for the recipient. The other wanted a physical cheque. And the dispute lead to the developer not being paid "on time" and he planted a time bomb (literally) in the source project in an encrypted module, then quit working on the project. I found it AFTER the time bomb went off on a lot of the clients customers machines.

I had similar payment issues but resolved those without resorting to a time bomb, and have in fact retained this client long term.

OUCH! Not a good way to ensure repeat business unless the developer was planning this to be their swan song.

Over the years I have hired developers who have been, for lack of a better term, pathetic. I've also hired developers who went far beyond what was expected. The latter always got repeat business from me, the former got noted in my little black book.

I've found that the good developers far out number the bad ones. Plus I throughly enjoy working with RB because of the information from the knowledgeable developers on this list. Answers to almost anything are an email or search away.
