It sounds like you should at least be able to step into the debugger. You said it worked in 2005r4? Did it work in 2006r1? I'd be curious to see (if possible) whether the project would compile and run in OS X. I'm skeptical it would help, but it might provide a clue or two..back in the 5.5 days that sometimes helped me figure out inexplicable crashes.
