How do you 'convince it that it's UTF8'?

You know... I may have found a solution. When I store the setup string it
defaults to null encoding. If I convince it that it is UTF8 I don't see the
problem anymore, and can recreate endlessly... Funny, I think Joe Huber
showed me this fix once.
