David Graham For anyone interested, my problem with serial communications locking up the computer when running under OSX (but not Windows) was solved by switching the FTDI232 serial cable with a Keyspan version. My thanks to Tony Barry who wrote me off-line to report that he solved a similar problem by switching to a Keyspan adaptor.
