The currently algorithm computes an approximation of typically 90%.
I need to fine-tune certain parameters.
The solution currently searches for inner-road points and for each
found point, tries to find road boundaries. For each found boundary,
the algorithms starts tracing the road using a radius of R around the
inner-road point.
The current problem is result of 'searches for inner-road points', since
this process steps through the picture based on a x/y-step of D=10
pixels.
Checking each point of the picture would be much more time consuming.
I need to play around with the R and D parameters.
All in all, the result is quite fast for non-C and a mini Mac-

It is not trivial. And you're not going to get both quality & a
small file size, and vectorized images are sometimes larger than
the original (compressed) bitmap. Your best bet may be to look
for some command line tools that can vectorize bitmaps and use Rb
to interface with, then you can parse the output vector data into
whatever format you need. Or, go some other route to get vector
map data (GIS).
