Simplest way is to do a http lookup onto a webserver, like http://
somedomain.com/mysoftwareversion.txt read that into a variable, do
an internal check to see if yourapp.version is different from the one
downloaded. Then use a dialog box that states "We have a much better
version available" jaddy jadday ja...
Then you could have a download button on the dialog, and a showurl
"http://somedomain.com/downloadNewVersion.php", which would make the
default browser start downloading.
mysoftwareversion.txt could contain the following :
VERSION, "3.33"
DOWNLOAD, "http://somedomain.com/download/newversion.zip"
Just read that file into variables, and you are laughing..... (just
rememberto update the textfile when ever you post a new version)
(trying to make your app update it self is just hard. It would need
another app installed which would do the download, quit your other
app, overwrite it, make sure ownerships are correct and and and and
and....., plain very hard to do)

Hi All,
I was wondering if there was anybody out there that could help us
write an
automatic update program which would automatically update our software
across the web. We are willing to pay for the help as we are
finding it
difficult to put something together which bypasses the various
permissions
and lockdowns on the different computers. Our software is sold in
schools
whose computers are often locked down at a ridiculous level which
is making
it hard for us to work out how to get past these permissions. As we
have
programs running on both Macintosh and Windows platforms, the
solution will
need to be completely cross platform.
If anybody can help us with this venture, please contact me offlist.
Thanks.
