Looks like someone is not handling an error which is raised within the Cocoa Foundation classes. But there is one important part missing from the Crash Report... the reason for the crash. It should be one or two lines above what you included (I don't have any crash logs to look at right now).

It looks like the error is occurring in the Apple code, but there is no way to know that for certain (REAL Software would have a much better chance determining that). If this is the case, then the REAL Software could report this issue to Apple and possibly add a fail-safe to prevent the error from crashing the entire app. The fact that Sean McCollum can reproduce this error in the REALbasic IDE is even more incentive for REAL Software to fix this issue.

Take a look at the Console log and see if there is an entry about the NSAssertion failure, as it would be useful to know what assertion is failing.
