Or, another option would be to use Declares and create the custom window
on your own. Then your open-source project will have even more value
because it will also demonstrate a way to create a custom window without
external plugins.

That is not a problem.
The plugin can run in demo mode and the one compiling the binaries needs
a serial number. You just must make sure the serial is not part of the
public source.
