Is it possible to know when a printer is out of paper?
No. The print data is spooled so printing will happen most times after
your print session is terminated.
On Mac, if the driver cannot send the task to the printer, the user
can check the dock for problems. This usually happens as below:
-----------------
While your document is printing, click the printer's icon in the Dock.
The Status column shows whether the document is printing or on hold.
If all print jobs to this printer have been stopped, "Jobs Stopped"
appears next to the printer's icon.
To resume a print job that is on hold, select it and click Resume.
To resume all print jobs after they've been stopped, click Start
Jobs. To stop all print jobs to this printer, click Stop Jobs.
If you want to delete a print job, select it and click Delete.
-----------------
Unless you wish to delve into the OS with many declares, it is
definitely not a task for the faint of heart.
