As Roger posted in the Mac System Font (probably MacRoman) a
    checkmark is chr(195)
No idea what it might be on Windows to print a character that looks
    like a check mark

   thanks Roger and Norman,

I will investigate what ascii for checkmark on windows is...
But at least i have a starting point.

Am I wrong here but does RB2006R3 handle
extended ascii beyond 128 on windows?

You've probably missed all of the discussion on this group about
"string encodings."

I suggest either:

1) Use a font (possibly "Symbol") that's the same everywhere, or

2) Look up the UNICODE codepoint for the checkmark and use that.

See the stuff in the L.R., books, and mailing list archives on "string
encodings."
