a little effort with a profiler almost always turns up surprises in real applications. This is so common, in fact, that I'm greatly surprised on those rare occasions when the profiler has no surprises for me!

I agree and think part of the reason is that it's not always clear which parts of a framework or external API calls are expensive and which are not.

We may be familiar with our code and have a good sense of where our own bottlenecks are. But we're at the mercy of profilers to learn where bottlencks are in external code and they often provide surprising results.
