That would work if the user were choosing his own names, but as I mentioned to
Norman, they're coming from a folder of text files.

How about, instead of a lookup table filled with nothing but unique
items, a lookup table that just translates a sanitized code for the
illegal characters? I dunno, like anytime you encounter "/" it's
converted to "$BSL$" or somesuch. I'm no expert, but I think that'd be a
somewhat better approach.
