There's no reason that a well written app can't support both, FileTypes for the best Mac experience and File Extensions as the lowest common demoninator for cross platform compatibility.

And I would concur that not all recent Apple software is well written enough to provide both capabilities. Doesn't make it right, nor the model for how we should expect our software to perform.
