This is not OT, btw.
You need to frank condello's PNG utilities plugin to load the PNG
with mask data.

I'm not sure if the plugin supports building a picture object with
the appropriate mask picture, but it's a simple task to do it your
self by using the plugin to copy the picture and mask components
separately.
