FWIW, it appears as if Flash is disabled under both Windows and Mac versions of QuickTime 7.1.3.

To re-enable:

Windows: Navigate to the QuickTime Control Panel, Advanced Tab, click "Enable Playback of Flash Tracks".

Mac: Open System Preferences, QuickTime, Advanced Tab, click "Enable Flash".

Over on the QuickTime-API list we are trying to figure out if these settings can be detected and/or changed programmatically. Stay tuned.

Some history -- Flash support under QuickTime used to lag a version behind (e.g. QuickTime 5 supported Flash 4, QuickTime 6 supported flash 5, etc.) However they got "stuck" at Flash 6, and have been there for 2 years now.

In the mean time, the flash plugin for Safari/WebKit has been progressing, most recently the version 9 universal binary was released.

So, something is weird -- why do we have Flash 9 support if operating under WebKit, but only Flash 5 support under QuickTime.

My pet theories are licensing disagreements or general malaise at Apple (they have also pretty much neglected QuickTime interactive support).

So we get a very mixed message as developers -- what exactly are we supposed to use as the "any media" playback system? It seems like the answer these days is WebKit (HTMLViewer), as it will support the Flash 9 plugin, as well as the QuickTime plugin as sub-content.

Maybe this is related to the Eolas patent.

Interesting, and quite odd that a Checkbox is all that's needed to
comply...

Could it be possible that Apple choose to do this because of a
Security risk?

Apple's knowledge base article says:

The version of Flash that ships in QuickTime is older than the version available from Adobe and used in Safari, therefore, while we still ship
Flash with QuickTime, it is turned off by default.

There is no mention of security issues with Flash in the security KB
article:
