I did file a bug report as Joe suggested, and got a very quick response form the RS testing department which reports that the difference is due to the underlying OS APIs, and that not much can be done about it.
One thing that could be done is that RS could write their own string-drawing routine instead of using OS APIs. I suspect that their apparent reluctance to do so arises from potentially intense complications when dealing with funky scripts.
