what does "eyeball this" mean? In this case the control y value is 2x the y value of the ovalshape. Is there a rule here? doesn't seem like a general-purpose solution.

I don't know what the 'rule' is. :)

The general purpose solutions that I know how to use include generating the coordinates of fitted polynomials or cubic splines, for example. Rb offers several approaches for displaying these results that don't require determining control points. StringShape is not one of these, of course.
