After having given the idea some thought, there's not much left of my initial enthusiasm. In fact, while it may be true that you can achieve stuff that you can't with 3rd party installers, at least on Windows, the sheer size of the executables produced by RB makes it impractical to develop and use your own RB based installer.

This is all of course IMHO.

I've been getting my feet wet in C and C++, and it suddenly doesn't look all that difficult to 'roll your own' installer in C. At least I can combine the joy of learning a new language with the reward of an executable being, guessing here, around 10% the size of the smallest RB executable.

Since you can do installer in RB, what are the reasons some other people use other installer like InstallShield.
Do they have to learn yet another scripting language?
Is there a plug-in installer for RB available?

On Windows we're not so lucky.

Just tried again, without any plugins. Create new project, gui
application, immediately build it. Resulting My Application.exe is
3,146,769 bytes.

For those who need to create their own Windows installer in RB, there
are some ways to get around the compiled size. I've created Windows
installers in RB to handle complex tasks that are not handled by most
installer programs (without the use of a scripting language).

When my installer is finished, I create a zip file, which reduces the
size greatly. Then I use a utility like Zip2Secrue.exe (free from
chillkat software) to create a self extracting executable, which
executes my installer upon extraction.

If you give this a try, I think you will find the size of your installer
dramatically reduced.
