My experience has been very good. While I am sure that there are exceptions for everything, I personally saw a dramatic increase in speed while ALSO seeing a reduction in overall memory used. That a total win-win.

The best example that i have to reference this is for some image processing functions I wrote last year for a professor. Speedup was at least 100% in most cases, and this was in a non-threaded, UI- friendly application (I gave time back to the UI every xxx number of iterations) . Memory footprint was reduced by 20-50% in a the (granted limited) tests that I did comparing both kinds of compiles.

Overall, I am very pleased with the improvement.
