The duplex modes are for data i/o, not voice i/o.
For a modem to support voice or analog output to the phone line, it
must have (the expense of) an analog input, buffer stage, control
logic and mixer at the phone line driver as well as motherboard
support (pins and traces). Therefore most (low cost and/or older)
modems do not include an analog input -> phone line feature.
I _could_ be wrong, and hope so, but, there may be no analog
connection between the microphone support circuits and the modem for
your hardware. An advanced, new, external modem may have an analog
input -> phone line feature, but expect to pay a premium as computer
modems are rapidly fading away.

what is the AT command for doing this?
the modem is an Apple Internal 56K in a PowerBook G3 Firewire (Pismo).
the docs on apple's site say that this modem will do half duplex or
full duplex.
when i hook it up to my land line and dial my cell number, it
rings, i answer the
cell and i can hear sound coming from the cell over to the
powerbook speakers, but
i can't hear anything on the cell coming from the microphone on the
powerbook.
does that imply that it's set to half duplex? (one direction at a
time)
i need to use the modem as a regular telephone.
thanks.
