I'd like to be able to read/write to DBF -- but ideally the IV and later formats, including index support. Granted, reading is 10x more important, since I'd migrate data in most cases, but I do find that DBF is sort of a universal import/export for some tasks.
The (C++) OOFILE product handles DBF IV format including the Microsoft Y2K bug but doesn't handle indexes. One reason is the variety of index formats out there - which one do you mean?

Yes, dBase IV compatibility is a useful common denominator - we wrote our backend for it to be able to round-trip exchange data with Access databases and the Jet engine. Now (10 years later) I suspect most people would solve the problem with XML.
