I've been doing development for Ubuntu Linux and remote
debugging has worked just fine, except for problems I've
caused. When I see the problem you describe, it's because the
debugger stub does not have a download directory set.

Hi Charles. It is set to the same directory as the stub. Every
couple of times the stub locks up, I have to reset the stub's
preferences.
Oh yes, I forgot to mention that it actually copies over 256k of
the debugapp before the lockup.
In the latest... I just tried remote debugging via RB 5.5 on
Linux and it worked fine.
Hmmm. I suppose I'd make certain that the versions of the debugger
stub and REALbasic IDE are compatible. Then try remote-debugging a
new project. If it copies some bytes, then probably the network
connection is okay. After that, I don't know...
Aaron just mentioned on workaround that has so far worked for me with
remote debugging to Linux
He said that
Downloading to a path with no spaces (or other characters requiring
escapes) should fix the issue for you. This also includes the app
name.
So don't have you remote stub in a path that has any spaces and make
sure the debug app has no spaces
This has worked so far with 2006 and the latest 2006 remote stub
