ith this in mind I wonder if any of the bigger players ( I am thinking
Einhugur, Monkeybread, Valentina - even RS themselves possibly ) might want to get together with smaller vendors to - not only provide a bigger sales outlet - but also to provide some sort of licensed "escrow" on the source
code - so that in the event of a small vendor no longer being able to
maintain and support their plugin, that software could then be passed over to and supported by the larger outfit and giving users of the plugin more
"peace of mind".

Well that might be too much responsibility... taking on someone else's code base has never been way in my experience...

This might be totally off the wall legally, and I know nothing about commercial stuff so this might ot be a good idea , but what might be more practical is if a way was found to ensure that if the product stopped being supported that the source code would either be released to customers or into the public domain...

If RS would be willing to act as the safety deposit box repository that would release the code in that event (conditions defined upfront before they agree to take it on).

That might both help small plugin/encrypted class developers make more sales as well as help RS by fostering more such products which would help RB grow.
