Hi Eric,
I have done some a long time ago, I can perhaps help you on basis..
At that time, the printer I used had a serial port and I was able to
connect to it using a terminal emulator and type directly PS command
to the printer.
Now, if I were you I would use ghostscript to have a preview of the
PS script..
