Well Charles, you must have one of those new fangled 2006 models because my old 2005r2 jalopy doesn't...

A 'Magic Packet' is 6*FF 16*MACAddress

It is sent out via UDP on any port using the network broadcast address.

Not very complicated, I've been working on the other routines first - I actually haven't attempted it yet.

As for all the security issues... I must explain further. It is my responsibility, after the lab has closed to the public, to do all updates, maintenance, backups, repairs, installs, general physical maintenance, and complete a slew of paperwork. All the items I'm implementing are done after normal hours. The computers are shut down right after any work is performed on them. I understand the 'normal' security risks involved but they don't apply in my case. As an example the last OS update to 10.4.8 took me five and a half hours to go from computer to computer doing the routine. I run 'Repair Permissions' prior to and directly after all updates. This may be overkill, but I look at it as an insurance policy against things going wrong. If I can automate any or all of this I go home earlier. I'm basically lazy at heart, if I can find a way to click a single button and do five and a half hours worth of work in a half hour, while browsing the internet, I'm there!

As for the log out and back in as another user... Seems strange that there isn't a way to do this. I would think this would be an administrators greatest tool. I still think it is possible to do however. How about resetting the plist that exists somewhere that specifies which account is used at startup. Simply altering the file and restarting would do this. I was hoping to more or less not restart the computer but just the user account (not switching, as this does not log out of the current account. )

Why not just ssh to the computer and install etc. from the command line?
