I am being told that Valentina is used quite a lot in
RealBasic. I did a tech eval of Valentina. And it totally
blew my mind. Using the OOP interface, and the speed, it is
totally awesome.
But I have a problem with it, something I totally forgot to
check out. It adds 60+ MB to my apps, so a SQLite app uses
14 MB total, my Valentina app takes 76 MB.
What I need to know from someone else who uses Valentina, can I
expect that people think it is OK to download an app of this size ?
Or have people figured out a better way to handle this ?
It seems big - and we are working on a way to slim it down a bit.
Apple is
making their default install of ICU accessible so Valentina on Mac
will go
on a diet (we are estimating a drop of about 20 MB or so). Mac apps
have
historically been small, but we noticed a significant amount of
bulge since
we starting using Apple sanctioned tools (lamenting Codewarrior here).
The last two applications I got online were 300 MB and 2 GB. The 2
GB one
made my eyes bulge at times but downloading by DSL it was
manageable - just
long.
This is my number one complaint against Valentina in that its size
has just bloated beyond imagination in the 2.x series.
Even trimming it by 20 MB only makes a dent in the size. For
people on dial up connections a 50 to 70 MB app will make them
think twice before downloading. So Valentina for all its good
points becomes a visual problem to our end customers. You need to
take more dramatic steps to reduce the size whatever those steps
may be. In this case, size does matter!
