Here I spoke for REALbasic: I have it for one Platform (OS) and I expect to get
the same developper experience when I use it under another Platform.
That's completely fair to expect. There are a few specific areas that I
would like to see improved upon in this regard as well (and I will
provide feedback id links at the bottom of this mail).
When I experience that I cannot store / restore styled text on one platform
(Novell suse linux), I have to use RTF (Windows XP SPII) and a different kind
of styled text files on Mac OS X, I am angry, legitimately angry.
Well. I would say that anger is a bit of an over-reaction. :)
Simply provide specific feedback ID's. If these are issues that affect
others, they'll sign on as well. If enough people sign on, then it
helps RS to prioritize which items to work on first.
At the end of this email I'll list out the Linux specific feedback items
that I see as having a high priority currently. Please reply back with
any additional ones that I've missed.
Worst, when I want to establish a win-win solution (add REALbasic exposure /
get some money) and I cannot do it because of the product, this specific OS
Platform, I do lost my smile.
The major issue from your standpoint seems to be styled text storing,
correct? If that's the case, why do you need to write an article about
styled text? I know there are an almost countless number of
applications and bits of functionality you could write about for RB/Linux.
OK, I give up. No answer from RS (Dec 21-Dec 22, 2006), overall bad user reports, let me
think that this version is "We have a linux version", not the similar
application (same as the one we have on Mac OS X and|or Windows XP).
To start with, look at the date. Right now Hanukkah just finished.
Christmas is about to begin. And RS is waist deep in developing the
next version. So not having an official answer from RS on this line of
emails doesn't seem like an issue to me.
Regardless -- This isn't something that warrants RS's response at this
point. Most of the emails talking about how bad RB for Linux are are
extraordinarily light on details (specific bugs, etc) and have been, at
least from what I've read, primarily complaints about Linux as an OS.
What, exactly, is a representative from RS supposed to respond to?
And, just to be clear. I've said it before, but RB for Linux (R4) under
FC6, Suse 10.2, Freespire and Ubuntu Edgy is extremely usable. Speed
wise it performs better (on theoretically slower hardware) than the Mac
version (ppc or ub). Stability is good. I am able to be extremely
productive with it.
That said.
There are some areas where RB needs work under Linux. Here is my own
personal list of feedback reports that, if resolved, would make RB quite
a lot better:

http://www.realsoftware.com/feedback/viewreport.php?reportid=ggtkegot
http://www.realsoftware.com/feedback/viewreport.php?reportid=jrsiciks
Not a long list. And definitely items that others have talked about.
But nothing here that prohibits me from using RB in any way. Would just
make my life easier once implemented/fixed. :)
If you've got some bugs you need fixed for RB under Linux to be usable
for you, post them and I'll sign on if I can reproduce them.
