I think you have to distinguish between large projects involving a

development team versus projects that are just
large in terms of the source code involved.
Both could arguably have different needs at times.

Large TEAM projects have, until very recently, been an enormous pain
There are still some issues with the version control format BUT it's
way better than it's ever been
