Or with the improvements in AJAX techniques, programs such as http:// www.gliffy.com/ replace offline apps altogether.

Imagine a consumer box shipped with a Linux Kiosk mode where the browser looks like the entire OS interface...

I actually think this is more likely and a bigger threat than Adobe going to more "native" stuff.

There will still be a need for niches and vertical market software such as the Lighting product mentioned in this thread.

The big danger is that a vendor like RS find themselves with too small a market for the development tool to be able to make a living from it and go out of business without open sourcing the tool.
