Thanks for the replies

I have a 250 GB USB drive rather than FW. Is firewire recommended for
speed or is it a necessity?

When Disk Utility is used to partition the drives, is a specific
format recommended? For example, Mac OS Extended vs Mac OS Extended
(Journaled).

Thanks again

Paul

Get a big external FW drive
Partition it into however many OS installs you need
Install the various OS' (one per partition)

In the start up disk preference panel select the partition to start
from and reboot
